Chapter 1

Science is a practical subject, teaching of which cannot be done properly only in theory form. For proper education of science, it is necessary to conduct various kinds of experimental works, which are practical in nature ( Science laboratory is place for scientific research. This is the place where various kinds of scientific apparatus and equipment are arranged in systematic manner. It is a unique learning environment, a site in which students can work individually or cooperatively in investigating some scientific phenomena. In the absence of these scientific apparatuses and equipment inside the laboratories, the practical functions of science cannot be carried out. ( Science laboratory is central to scientific instructions and it forms essential component of science education. Laboratory activities appeal as a way of allowing student to learn with understanding and, at the same time, engage in a process of constructing knowledge by doing science (Tobin 1990). Meaningful learning is possible in the laboratory if students are given the chance to work with the available equipment and materials in order to be able to construct their own knowledge about various scientific concepts. In the Philippines, the government together with the Department of Education as well as the private sectors is helping hand in hand in providing the needs of the schools and the students in terms of laboratory apparatuses and equipment. This is to ensure that students will be exposed to several hands on activities that will develop them to be active learners. Knowing the current status of these science laboratories is vital since it plays a major role in the learning of the students. Because of this, the Researcher felt the need to evaluate the laboratories present in the selected private and public schools in the Division of Butuan City. Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the problems encountered in the use of Science laboratory as perceived by the students and teachers in selected private and public Secondary Schools in the Division of Butuan City.

Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions: 1. What is the profile of the student’s respondents in terms of: 1.1. School
1.2. Year Level
2. What is the profile of the teacher’s respondents in terms of:
2.1. School
2.2. Year Level
2.3. Area of Specialization

3. What are the problems encountered by the respondents on the following areas:
3.1. Conformity to Laboratory Standards
3.2. Periodic Maintenance
3.3. Safety Measures in the Laboratory
3.4. Sufficiency of Equipment and Supplies
4. Is there significant difference in the responses of the respondents?
5. What solutions can be recommended by the teacher respondents on the problems encountered? Hypothesis
Null Hypothesis: There is no significant difference in the response of the respondents. Theoretical and Conceptual Framework
Laboratory activities have distinctive and central role in the science curriculum. This study will focus on the problems related to the use of Science laboratories in the selected private and public schools in the Division of Butuan City.

The significance of providing laboratory activities in teaching science concepts originated from the views of Bruner (1960), Gagne’ (1963), and Schwab (1962).
Bruner (1960) suggested that much of intellectual development is characterized by a unique and successive set of cognitive representations which he called the inactive, iconic and symbolic forms. Young children, he maintained, learn best through the physical manipulation of concrete objects, and maturation as a product of increasingly successful attempts to use the signs and symbols to represent objects and events. His works stressed the significance of evolving...
