Chapter 1

1.1. Introduction
The purpose of this study is to assess and evaluate some of the parameters of technology advancement, in respect of its impact on human resources within Sasol OIL (one of South African petroleum industries) as an organization. It seeks to investigate the existence and effects of technology advancement on employees' skills, knowledge, well being, performance, and the role that managers play in the advancement of such technology. This will be undertaken to determine either the positive or negative implications of technology advancement to the organization in general, but more importantly upon employees at Sasol Oil.

1.2. Research context: background

The problems, which this study attempts to investigate, are located within a socio - historical and socio - economic context, as it relates to democratic South Africa. This in many ways has affected the capacity of Sasol Oil to bring about effective change in human resources policy, in relationship to technology advancement and to management practices post 1994. In so doing the study seeks to contribute to effective management and staff empowerment and advancement, in respect of certain variables of human resource practice, as it relates to technology advancement within Sasol OIL and possibly similar organisations.

1.3. Problem Statement

Studies by the International Labour Organization (Hirschowitz, 1987b) have shown that more jobs are lost when countries fail to modernize than when advanced technologies are introduced. Discussions in respect to technology tend to be complicated even in developed countries, which do not continually update machinery and equipment, which results in the loss of market share. The word technology is used in many different ways, to refer to very different situations. Its understanding and subsequent implementation can be elusive in terms of a standard definition, in respect of policies, laws and procedures: * The study therefore, facilitates an understanding of some crucial aspects in relationship to the impact of technology advancement to human resources development within Sasol Oil as an organization. * Its impact upon employment, if it is not introduced gradually. * To explore the less known impact of this technology advancement on human performance, especially among unskilled workers and, thus the inherent potential to deskill the existing workforce. * The realization that it is possible that continuous technology advancement could also have a negative impact on...
