The Corner Bookstore aims to be the finest providers of books in India with the largest network of small format community bookstores across metros, mini-metros and smaller towns.

2. Executive Summary

Promoters and Management Team

Corner Bookstore Company Pvt Ltd (“CBC”) was incorporated in India in September 2003 and opened its first store in Delhi on 21st November 2003.

Aalok Wadhwa (41 yrs), CEO, is a graduate in Economics from St Stephen’s College, Delhi, and an MBA from IIM, Bangalore. He has about 19 years of experience and has successfully done four previous start-ups. His last position was as the Head of Middle East and S.Asia, Encyclopaedia Britannica. He has been leading the Company since its inception in 2003.

Gautam Ramchandani (36 yrs), COO, who is a Business Management graduate along with a Degree in Hotel Management. He has about 16 years experience in systems and operations and a background in publishing. He was responsible for designing operating systems for the Taj Group of Hotels in India and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the business.


The Market for books in India is growing at a conservative estimate of 30% (source: ORG MARG, Economic Times Intelligence Group). An audience of over 110 million English language readers and total of 660 million readers (including vernacular) is tremendously under served with just over 300 mainstream bookstores throughout India. The Size of the Market was approx US$ 60M in 2002 and has potential to grow to over US$ 600 M over the next 4 years.

CBC is a small format Bookstore Chain with 39 stores opened over the 18 months since its inception. The bulk of them having opened in the recent six months along with the creation of a very visible and admired brand. It has successfully used a combination of stand-alone stores and store in stores along with alliances with retail chains like Barista Coffee, Music World, HPCL etc. Store sizes range between 70 sq.ft. To 850sq.ft.

The Company has tie-ups with over 90 publishers, regional offices in 5 cities across India and a team of experienced and trained sales and supply chain specialists coupled with a strong purchase team. It has a proprietary Software system that enables it to manage its entire operations from order aggregation, inventory management, sales tracking, CRM/loyalty programmes thus optimising resources based on real time MIS.

Unique Business Model

The Company has pioneered the small format bookstore chain concept and promotes “the friendly neighbourhood bookstore” with the benefits of convenience, intimate customer experience and selection (typically, between 2,100 – 3,000 titles) tailor-made for the community it serves and driven by a staff passionate about books.
