APPLE- Location and Organizational Structure

Apple Inc. is based out of Cupertino, CA. Here the company owns facilities for its primary executive offices, research and development functions, and also additional land for the future deveoplment of the company’s second corporate campus (Mergent). According to the Mergent Online database, “As of Sept. 25, 2010, Co. owned or leased approx. 10,600,000 sq. ft. of building space, primarily in the U.S., and to a lesser extent, in Europe, Japan, Canada, and the Asia-Pacific regions. Of that amount, approx. 5,600,000 sq. ft. was leased, of which approx. 2,500,000 sq. ft. was retail building space.” Therefore, while Apple owns its own land for their headquarters in Cupertino, CA, over half of the company’s property is leased with a quarter of that land being dedicated to their retail business segment. Apple Inc. manages its business predominantly on a geographic basis. Their five operating segments consist of the Americas, Europe, Japan, Asian-Pacific and Retail. In order to better understand each of these segments, it is important to know what countries are included within them. The Americas includes only North and South America while the Europe segment includes all European countries as well as the Middle East and Africa. The Asia-Pacific segment is comprised of both Australia and Asia, but not Japan as its market share is large enough to demand its own segment. The Retail segment refers to the Apple retail stores which operate in eleven countries, including the United States (Mercer). When speaking of total revenue amongst the different segments, the Americas accounts for over 37% with Europe being a close second at 28% (see chart). Taking a look at the three year trend represented in the chart, it is clear that the Japan and Europe segments are experiencing the greatest growth as each of their total revenues doubled between 2009 and 2010.
